Short deadline so it’s a quick turnaround project but it’d be kind of cool to get a couple of entries from around the 2d and 3d courses here.

Redbull are running a competition of which prizes rather brilliantly involve winning internships in very cool companies as well as free software and stuff. Be worth having a go if you think you can pile it on top of your busy college schedule!

Spread the word!

I want one.

Pretty cool 3d visualisations of classic artworks. If you find it interesting you should have a quick listen to the video interview with Quayola about half way down this page: http://www.nexusproductions.com/case/strata4/index.php Interesting to see the tools he has created. Also at the end of the interview it tells you the programmes he uses as a basis for 3d programming and compositing. They are his tools towards an end result which is what we should consider all programmes… like a paintbrush.

Here you can see the final images rendered with HDRi lighting and some random 3d objects put in place. I was just looking at shadow casting and lighting in a realistic manner. Below is the original Image.

We set up a green screen and tried a couple of things. This is rather unsuccessful as we didn’t have any decent lights or indeed a decent camera to use but it was forced into something anyway. I used Premiere here and am completely out of touch with compositing techniques etc in it- In fact first attempt. The Mac was tied up- Final Cut Pro is a much better tool for this sort of thing. Anyway I thought Peter’s insane laughter in the background and Niall’s very stylish swimming enactment was worth a giggle at least.

Well he did like…

Was chatting with the fabulous Terry Quigley today, discussing stop motion animation techniques. After looking at a video he sent me I decided there had to be a really quick way of doing people based stop motion. Having considered my options I came up with a cunning plan. In all from setting up the tripod to video output to Vimeo took around 30 minutes all in. Not bad for a first attempt at the method. I’ll probably run through this technique in one of my lectures before the end of the term in Digital Compositing if I get time.

Quick HDRi example using 3d Studio Max 6. The lighting conditions are not ideal for this kind of thing. MQ218 is very saturated with light and the blinds have little impact on it. The features available to you are somewhat restrictive in Max 6 (considering it is nearly 8 years old), 3ds Max 11 will allow a much greater depth of realism and control over light and shadowing. There is a slight discoloration in the render of the chrome ball- that could have been fixed for example and the lack of ambient bounce to the table from the objects is also noticeable. The ambient occlusion would have been greatly improved with the use of the Mental Ray render as opposed to the scanline.

Just a quick example of what can be done very quickly using a digital camera and a bit of 3ds Max animation. (this took around 2 hours to complete all in)
